About

Rachele Unter is originally from Brooklyn, and currently lives and works in Bergen County, New Jersey. She worked as a secretary and took classes at Brooklyn College before transitioning to studying art at the New School for Social Research with Ad Reinhardt. Even while raising a family, art was always a part of Rachele’s life. She continued to hone her skills by taking evening courses in painting and drawing at the Bronx House Community center, where she was instructed by Painter Lillian Orlowsky, who applied the artistic philosophies of Hans Hoffman.

After moving to New Jersey, Rachele joined the Art Center of Northern New Jersey as a student of Printmaker Robert De Lamonica, which broadened her artistic horizons. She also studied drawing with Bruce Dorfman while attending Ramapo College, where she received a Bachelor of Fine Arts. Later, she studied lithography at William Paterson University with Printmaker Eileen Foti.

Rachele has been inspired by art from different cultures, and is particularly interested in collecting African art and emulating its aesthetic in her own work. She also draws influence from Miró, Picasso, and Kandinsky. Her work is constantly evolving as she looks for new avenues of meaning in her life, always absorbing experiences that can be translated into art.

“Visual art is my language. Colors and lines are my words. I have never understood why people need to attach so many words to a painting. I just feel like when I speak I have more in the background that is left unsaid, that remains unexpressed. If you can communicate something through your art, then you will have spoken and narrated many stories. The meaning of the visual text is never fixed. Sometimes you have to let the viewers engage with the piece and make their own stories.”

Rachele belongs to the following organizations:

Piermont Flywheel Gallery
Catherine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club
Salute to Women in the Arts
Printmaking & Painting Affiliates

All of these organizations have exhibits all year long and she usually partakes in their shows.
